Warrant Call Scams
Welcome back to Fraud Fridays! Today on the docket: Warrant Call Scams!
Warrant call scams are similar to tax call scams (see FF post on 11/18/2022), and the premise is simple. You get a call from an "agent," "sheriff," or other law enforcement claiming that you have a warrant out for your arrest. They will then threaten an imminent arrest. This will be accompanied by the offer to settle everything, for a fee. This fee is often paid through gift cards.
You have not been in contact with any agency, federal or otherwise. You have, instead, been in contact with the scammer. If the "fee" is paid, you will suddenly have a lot more alleged government agencies demanding funds from you. These are, of course, all scammers. There was never a warrant out for you. Even if there was, the police aren't nice enough to give you a ring before they bust down your door.
Thank you for stopping by this week's Fraud Friday; we look forward to seeing you next week!
